Apprentices enjoy the great outdoors!
We had a great day in the woods at Hessaford farm yesterday. The apprentices were supposed to spend 2 days down there and camp overnight on Wednesday, but that plan was aborted due to the weather unfortunately. Still, when I arrived around 11am yesterday the group were in full flow! They had built a fire and had also made a cooker from a tin dustbin. Brilliant! They then prepped up lunch using the food they’d brought with them……there was fish, whole chickens, corn on the cob and jacket potatoes. They stuffed the chicken with lemon and fresh herbs and cooked in the dustbin and the fish was also stuffed with herbs, wrapped in foil and cooked on the open fire. One of the apprentices made a delicious tomato based sauce to accompany the fish and chicken. It was great!
Whilst everything was cooking away, our special guest Justin Miles of www.lastgreatchallenge.com gave a motivational talk to the group. He spoke of his near fatal car crash 10 years ago and how his ‘mind-over-matter’ attitude and sheer determination helped him recover……9 months to the day of having the accident Justin was running a marathon. He explained to the apprentices about training for his polar expedition next year and the challenges he will face whilst down there!
Following the talk, Justin took the apprentices in the field to do some log hauling and circuit training. Even I had a go at log hauling! It wasn’t easy. The log weighed around 25kilos…..Justin’s pulk will weigh 10 times that and he will have to pull it 20 miles a day, everyday for 3 and a half months. Tough!
It was really inspiring listening to him talk and I hope the apprentices got a lot out of it. After all that exercise though everyone had built up an appetite so we went back to check on the food which was just about ready to serve! MMMmmmm!!!!
