Panforte – the Christmas Store Cupboard Super Star
I love stocking up for Christmas, it is the perfect excuse to fill my cupboards with delicious Italian food and drink, ready for welcoming guests in from the cold.
Through the festive period panforte is one item I cannot be without, it’s a traditional Italian staple. It is densely packed with nuts, fruit and spice and historically enjoyed at Christmas time in Sienna. It makes everything taste of Christmas and is surprisingly versatile. It is great by itself, or with coffee as a treat for when you have finished wrapping yet another batch of presents. I keep a couple handy for unexpected visitors, they are so beautifully packaged they make a lovely gift.
Panforte comes in a variety of flavours, the cioccolato (chocolate) panforte is perfect enjoyed after a meal with vin santo. It is also a great accompaniment for meats and cheeses; a round of the Margarita (almond and fruit) panforte is an ideal addition to your festive cheeseboard. Furthermore it is a star ingredient in my signature Christmas salad combining slices of speck (a wonderful smoke cured ham from Trentino), sweet and fragrant clementines, funky salad leaves and slithers of finchi e noci (fig and walnut) panforte finished with some 12 year aged Belazu balsamic and a drizzle of good olive oil.
