Press Release: Class of 2016 Apprentice Scheme Graduates – 16 May 2016

It’s been an astonishing 10 years since Fifteen Cornwall welcomed its first intake of apprentices and opened its restaurant doors in Watergate Bay on 18 May 2006.

Now 10 years on, the Jamie Oliver inspired programme is celebrating the graduation of its 10th team of apprentices, who have completed an incredible professional and personal journey to graduate as trained chefs with a world of new opportunities open to them – with 11 graduating on 16 May 2016 as fully qualified chefs.

This comes after an initial four months of study at Cornwall College, a year’s hands-on experience in the Fifteen Cornwall kitchen, sourcing trips, off site specialised training, then further work placements in professional kitchens around the UK.

Jamie Oliver spent time with the graduates during the year, and also during his visit to Fifteen Cornwall on May 16.

Jamie Oliver said: “It’s hard to believe that it’s already been 10 years since I came down to Watergate Bay and started the Fifteen Cornwall restaurant and Apprentice Programme. It’s been one hell of a ride, but it absolutely remains one of the things I’m most proud of. Fifteen Cornwall has produced chefs and chefs and more chefs, and is still knocking out incredible food day in, day out, year after year. Thank you to everyone in the Fifteen Cornwall team as well as all our wonderful friends and supporters who’ve helped us along the way.”

Keiran English, 19 from Newquay, was named Apprentice of the Year at the graduation ceremony which was hosted by Jamie’s mentor Gennaro Contaldo. Keiran said, “The programme has made me a lot more confident and taught me not to doubt myself as much; it’s made me actually want to come to work every day. To anyone thinking of applying to Fifteen, definitely do it, it changes you – just don’t give up!”

Matthew Thomson, chief executive said: ”Our congratulations go to all 11 graduates. Their hard work and commitment has enabled us to give them the opportunity to transform their lives and launch lifetime careers. We wish them all the very best for successful futures. 2016 is a very special year for Fifteen Cornwall – marking ten years since we started out on this incredible journey. I would like to thank everyone who has been part of our story to date – staff, suppliers, apprentices and diners. Here’s to the next ten years!”
