It’s all about the rose…..
Every time I open a weekend newspaper I see another article about pink wine. Some old stalwarts in the wine business are still a bit ‘sniffy’ about rosé, but we love it.
Pink wines are much closer to a white wine than a red but they do have a little tannin from the skins of the grapes so this gives some rosés a lovely texture. Fresh and lovely for the heat wave!
We have sold a load of the premium Provence rosé made on the estate owned by Brad and Angelina, the Miraval is expensive but is worth every penny. Lovely bright fruit and some structure, a great food wine.
Now is the time to stock up on some lovely pink wines from our supermarkets, for much of the year the offerings are limited to dull white Zinfandel or Blossom Hill. Recently however I have seen interesting wines from Spain, France, Australia and Italy in this category. Also worth looking for are pink pinot grigios, the Italians call them ‘ramato’ which is copper in Italian and some of these wines have real depth with loads of fresh acidity.
Provence seems to be a major focus, MIP (made in Provence) is a wine much in demand, I recently had a great bottle of wine from Chateau Beaulieu, their cuvée Alexandre has raspberry fruit with a hint of liquorice.
